Meeting Minutes for February 17th, 2012
Attendees: Aaron Wittman, Chris Jacques, Joel Soldano, James Searle, Luke Martin, Eric Anderson, Cary Gouldin, Jesse Poole, Kaitlin Albertson, Harry Garrott, Elaina Frulla, Josh Bartlett, Tony Delgado, Kate Cove, and Sara Al-otaibi.
Budget.
-Kaitlin Albertson explained that the EGSO has received the following funding:
1. Conference $550
2. 18th century group: $150
3. Americanist: $500
4. Allotted Funds: $250
-Joel Sodano explained that on March 20th that Princeton professor Sophie Gee will do an afternoon talk and sit in on Mike Hill’s graduate class in the evening.
-Josh Bartlett will use the Americanist group funding to set up a standalone speaker/lecturer late in the Spring semester or early in the Fall semester.
Possible option(s) include: Cristobal Silva
Aaron Wittman suggested reaching out to the Biopolitics reading group for other suggestions for possible speakers.
-James Searle noted that on Friday April 6th, an Americanist named Tom Dehcand will be giving a talk.
Conference Committee
Chair Chris Jacques explained the following:
-Keynote Speaker is Thierry Bardini
-March 30-31st are the dates of the EGSO conference. It will be at the downtown campus.
-On Sunday February 18th, the committee is going to review abstracts and begin considering paneling.
A Proposal
Eric Keenaghan is interested in starting a grant for a LGBTQ speaker series that would be affiliated with the conference beginning in Spring 2013.
Social Committee
Aaron Wittman reports:
-No GAC meetings this semester. Chris is interim junior representative.
-Tony Delgado will be assisting the social committee in posting social events on Facebook.
-Next Happy Hour is March 2nd at 4 o’clock at the Hill Street Cafe.
-Saturday February 18th is the Albany Devils hockey game.
-Elaina Frulla has continued working on the “Albany Oh Yeah!” project. She is requesting submissions of popular hot spots in Albany. Please send them to her at [email protected]. There is a deadline of May 1st.
-Aaron was is gauging interest in the following events:
1. bowling in Delmar
2. a car pool to the Malta drive-in
3. a traveling potluck.
4. Glow-in-the-dark mini-golf.
Please contact him.
- EGSO also needs a photographer to take pictures of events and meetings.
Dippikill Retreat
Jesse Poole reported:
-15 people have signed up to attend the EGSO retreat.
-There is a $15 cap on camping at the site.
-Jesse will reserve a 6-person cabin on March 1st.
-They are now looking for more people to join in.
Outreach Committee
Joel Sodano reported:
-Books for prisoners has 600 books. The program needs funding for postage.
-The committee is throwing around ideas of having April 9th as a day for packaging up books for prisoners.
-Sarah is seeking funding from MCAA and Programing.
-The committee is in the process of selecting a theme and venue for a writing outreach event in Fall 2012 or Spring 2013.
GSO Report
-Sara reported there are a few positions open at the GSO:
1.University GSO Senator
2. University Life Council
3. Office Manager of the East Campus location.
4. MCAA Chair
These are upcoming events:
- Film Screening of Fag-Bug at the Downtown Campus Friday Feb 24th 6pm with Q&A (fulfills MCAA requirement)
- MCAA international dinner
- Feb 25th Mardi Gras themed Casino Night at Jillians (Dress in Costume) Tickets at GSO office.
- Hockey game, bowling in March and April.
- MCAA funding is available for events. Come up with some!
- School of Public Health is hosting a Male Date Auction February 18th to benefit suicide prevention.
- Writing Institute Workshop Monday Nights 6pm-9pm Submit to participate. Wednesday 22nd is deadline.
