Nominee information
EGSO President
Nominee: Christopher Jacques
I am running for president in order to continue to improve upon what my predecessors have done, as well as the opportunity to think of new ways for the EGSO to interact with the larger University at Albany and city of Albany communities. I have been an active member of the EGSO since I arrived here; during the 2010-2011 academic year, I served as vice president to Joel Sodano; this past year, I chaired the conference committee, which I have served on for the past three years. I understand what the EGSO does, and I believe I have a good idea of what the needs of our graduate students are. I would like to continue and expand upon our outreach, social and events programs in order to reinforce the work we have done while using that work as a building block toward creating new opportunities for community involvement and intellectual development.
EGSO Vice-President
Nominee: Jessy Poole
I believe I am qualified for this position because I have been involved with the operations of two of our three committees (social and outreach), dedicated time and effort to their missions, and taken the initiative to explore opportunities for growth.
Some of the contributions I've made to the EGSO in my first year include organizing the Dipikill retreat, which is certain to be a huge success; and laying the groundwork for a new community outreach event that is still in the planning stages.
I've also been able to spot opportunities to facilitate the success of other events such as Books for Prisoners. I used my connections to the NYS Writer's Institute to obtain hundreds of books for the Books for Prisoners campaign.
I have a fierce dedication to the graduate student culture in the English Department. I go out of my way to recruit and welcome new students, and to lend encouragement and support to existing ones. I want to serve in this position because it would place me in a better position to continue to do the many things I already do to help make the English Graduate Department a community in which we can all thrive.
EGSO Treasurer
Nominee: Kate Cove
I would like to nominate myself for the position of EGSO treasurer for the 2012-13 term. Although I was an active member of the EGSO this past year, I would like to contribute on a more regular basis. For the upcoming year, I'd like to do so by acting as treasurer. I think I would be an excellent candidate for this role since, being extremely organized, I would be able to keep a systematic record of all the EGSO finances and tallies of moneys coming in and out of the account.
EGSO Secretary
Nominee: Jared Young
Going into my second year at the University I would really like for Masters students to have a presence within the EGSO and be active members of the department. The diversity and camaraderie between both Doctoral and Masters students can help foster a strong department and Executive Board. With that said, I would like to offer myself for the secretary position of the EGSO. Although its responsibilities may be smaller than that of the president’s, its importance should not be overlooked. The communication required from the secretary helps bind the general English graduate body as well as the EGSO. As an undergraduate I held a position in the department of Resident Life that required me to serve as a liaison between a concentrated body of students and a larger body of students. This was no small feat and I made sure to invest the time and interest that was necessary to maintain this communication. Beyond that, I suppose I could bore you with stories of how I was the designated secretary when I was a Boy Scout, and diligently took notes in preparation for our big camporees and other events. Or how I would volunteer to take notes for my sick classmates in middle school just so I could have the chance to use carbon paper. Secretary resume and poor jokes aside, I know I can help to further the EGSO next year and I would be glad to serve on its Executive Board.
Undergraduate Advisory Committee (UAC) Representative
Nominee: Eric Anderson
My name is Eric Anderson, and next semester will be my forth year in the program. The past three years I have been actively involved in the EGSO, serving on the Conference and Outreach committees, and also as Secretary and President. I believe that these experiences, in addition two years of teaching now as a graduate student, will allow me to effectively fulfill the duties of a graduate representative on GAC. I can promise that I will consider what is best for undergraduates and teachers when providing input when the role requires it, and I will also hold forums through the EGSO where I hope gather graduate student opinion when possible and relevant. I should also add that I would be honored to serve my fellow graduate students and the department in this role.
Graduate Advisory Committee (GAC) Representative
Nominee: Christopher Jacques
I will be a fourth-year doctoral student, and I have long track record of working to strengthen our graduate community. If elected to the Graduate Advisory Committee, I would work toward creating more opportunities for graduate students to have their voices heard on important issues regarding the direction of the department, and I would push for as much transparency as possible between the faculty and the graduate community. I would also do my best to represent the perspectives of our graduate students' diverse interests; although I have my own positions and beliefs, I think a healthy intellectual environment is one which encourages discussion between a plurality of methodologies and interests.
